What is podiatric surgery?
Podiatric surgery is a specialist field in the podiatry profession. Podiatric surgery is the surgical treatment of conditions affecting the foot, ankle and related lower extremity structures by accredited and qualified specialist podiatrists. This is carried out under local anaesthetic with IV sedation and also local anaesthetic alone. As with many medical specialties, podiatry is paired with a surgical specialty, podiatric surgery,to ensure that patients can get high quality surgical care from someone who is trained both as a surgeon and as a podiatrist.
Any clinical title which includes the term “Podiatric” denotes an independent clinician who is clinically qualified to diagnose and treat foot problems.Podiatric clinicians are not doctors i.e. Registered Medical Practitioners, but have instead specialised throughout their training, purely in the treatment of one area of the body i.e. the foot and associated structures.Your treatment will be based on clinical need and you will have to be over 16 years.Surgery will not be the first option but only if non-surgical options have failed.
Podiatric surgery in general focus on disorders of the lower extremities, including damage caused by chronic conditions such as diabetes, trauma to the feet and ankles, and congenital malformations.Podiatric surgery can be done in hospital environments as well as clinics. It involves repairs, reconstructions and corrections on the feet and ankles, dealing with everything from severe bunions to badly broken feet which require surgery for stabilization. As with other surgeries, podiatric surgery may have a variety of approaches to surgical challenges, and patients are evaluated before surgery, including physical examinations, medical imaging studies to visualize the inside of the foot and ankle and patient interviews to discuss surgical options and outcomes.
